I have never read the short story so I had only the film to go on. I would add a disclaimer here. If you wanted to take the movie as it is with no book (which it clearly has already done by itself) I would say to NOT read the book if you want to enjoy the movie. Perhaps you can read the book afterwards as a completely different but slighly thematically similar choice? Just an idea.

Also, the movie is gut wrenching by itself. I did a big spoiler review on my livejournal about it too.
