Dusk settled around them, still and silent, their thoughts so far away that the distance was unfathomable, even to Allan, ‘though he had crossed it twice. Beside him Luke absorbed his sudden, newest loss. A sundering of lives that would go on, but not together, and one of them would be diminished by it. The chance of reunion as slight as the shard of moon above, so slender now in its wane, tomorrow it would be gone. The idea of them all that would remain in the vastness of the world. He could not dare to hope that they, in whatever joy or sorrow they found in life, might think of him.
Allan offered up his one comfort, a simple truth. “He was happy,” he said softly, easing his voice into the quiet. “He is happy.”
And the words drifted away.
“My aunt will be worrying. Come back to dinner? I’m sure she’d like to hear the news from you.”
“Yeah, alright.” Grinning, he added, “You know, I always wanted to meet your Auntie Annie.”
The wink of an early star drew his gaze, stilled his feet, and he made an impulsive promise that he, at least, would always think of them in the best and worst moments of his life.
