Just a question: Does anyone like ted hughes? I seriously have a huge huge disliking for him.
I dont understand how he can even consider ever having put in two cents in about sylvia when he hurt her so much. I know Some people like him I'm sure but not many I hope.

oh he was extremely extremely talented. I just don't like the way he treated her. I know she wasn't easy to live with due to her illness but I don't like that he mistreated her so much. I also hate the fact that he glossed over his mistakes when it came to their relationship.

I have no problems with him because no mater how many books are written or what you read no one will ever understand the full truth of what went on in their lives. Who am I to pass judgment on either of them. I am sure they both have their faults in the situation. I don't like that he betrayed and lied to her, but I don't know him to say I like or dislike him. He is an amazing poet. That is all I can speak upon.

regardless of his relationship with plath, i'm quite fond of the poet, always have been. i got into hughes in high school before i really got into reading plath. he's really one of the best english poets out there if you dare check out his stuff. i'd suggest picking up "birthday letters." it's a response to his relationship with sylvia and how he dealt with her death.

If you speak with peopke who knew Plath anad Hughes when they were together -- or read their writing (the friends), or interviews done with them -- you'll find that Plath and Hughes both bore responsibility for the demise of the relationship. Did he cheat? Yes. Did she know he was a womanizer when she met him? Yes. Were they both young, insanely talented, high-strung, ambitious individuals? Yes. It's also important to remember that she had been mentally ill 9for lack of a more precise term) for many years. Again, people who knew her in college say that it was very clear that she was amazing, brilliant, and unstable.

It's also worth noting that Hughes lived the rest of his life with a lot of pain over Plath's suicide. Read Birthday Letters and Howls and Whispers, if you haven't already, and take a look at his recently-published letters.

I am more of a fan of Ted Hughes also. No one is perfect. Many people have horrible disfunctional relationships that don't end in suicide. And blaming Hughes for Plath's demise is just unfair. I read something recently that suggested without one another they wouldn't have created the work they did. (well more so for Plath, since Hughes kept writing).
