No sooner had I finished my last day of spring planting for this year (five rose bushes, one tree peony) than the skies went lead-grey with cloud, and opened up, and poured. Rain falling in gushers. It's just what I most wanted ( Read more... )

Make sure you water that peony in very well in fall. Alberta is generally a zone 3, but you can get away with slightly more delicate plants with a bit of TLC as long as we don't have a savage winter before it is well-established. Sighs. I have failed miserably with rhodedendrons, despite getting only the hardy variety and babying the things.

Well, I admire your rhododendron bravery. I wouldn't have dared.

I'll water it like crazy. Thanks - from reading your lj, I know you know more about this than I do. I can safely say that Calgary is 4, and I have one south-facing bed that may approach a 5. Every plant I've put in it so far has responded with joy.

So I put the peony there. Ha ha! I have a wisteria and everything! I never ever thought I'd be able to grow a wisteria. In the same bed, natch.

Oh shut up. Grins. I would die to grow wisteria. I guess you have the mountain effect and it is more shelter and further from the frozen north. Grump. That said, you might try getting a ceanothis, (Californian Lilac). This is a zone 5, but would do well in your sunny bed. They are to die for, over and over. There are two varieties. One is an evergreen and has pale blue flowers and the other is deciduous and has the most vibrant blue flowers that have an incredible fragrance. The color is like a gentian. Go google it. I think you will fall in love with the plant and if I can't have it, then I would like someone who loves it to enjoy it.

Oh, I want that. I want it! Vibrant blue flowers are so hard to find. (Man, I have got to get some butterfly delphiniums again.) I managed to coax a buddleia into bloom once, but it turned out to be much less exciting than its reputation ... anyway, this looks like buddleii ought to look.
