from allmusic.com (although it hasn't been updated with this last album)

Chicago singer/songwriter/violinist Andrew Bird updates the traditions of small group swing, German Leider and New Orleans jazz, mixing gypsy, folk and rock elements into his distinctive style. Bird's projects include his group the Bowl of Fire (which also includes drummer Kevin O'Donnell, bassist Josh Hirsch and guitarist Colin Bunn) and performing as an auxiliary member of the Squirrel Nut Zippers; in turn, the Zippers' Katherine Whalen and James Mathus appeared on the Bowl of Fire albums Thrills and Oh! The Grandeur. Bird has also recorded with artists like Pinetop Seven and Lil' Ed Williams, teaches music at the Old Town School of Folk Music, and performed on the score and soundtrack from the 1999 Tim Robbins film The Cradle Will Rock. His third album, 2001's The Swimming Hour, surprisingly found the Bowl of Fire turning to pop music, and with excellent results. As band members remained active in their various other projects, the band continued and work on a ( ... )

sometimes i like to use the word banal to describe cream cheese

its kinda an artkid ctach word, full of nothing, is nothing, and therefore should be used more then ever

other art words: collective, subjective, beauty etc all meaning pretty much nothing anymore

peace out on the old wire fence.

honestly, i know that i use every pronunciation of "banal" possible. it surprises me when it does come out, cause i never know how i'm going to say it. i try to avoid saying it, though, not because i'm afraid i'm mispronouncing it (i love mispronunciation!), but because i think it's just a dumb word. i think i always use the word "provincial" in it's stead when given the option (not to imply that they're synonyms, of course). it sounds even more erudite, and really, what's more important than sounding erudite. what gives me more trouble is "assuage". and "erudite" for that matter ( ... )

sounds like you and some of those banalist panelists should get together and drink some scotch and water while smoking your cigars and making old grumpy british man noises.

i think its strange that almost everyone on this thread commented on the way they pronouce "banal" but you are the only person to make any mention of other good albums ("good" being relative because you did make mention of electric six). and hey, bright eyes references don delillo in one of his songs and i don't see you fauning over him. speaking of song lyrics and short shrifts, i read yesterday the decemberists lay claim that they have the best vocabulary in modern rock, who are, consequently, playing here wednesday night.

did you see hitchhikers guide yet? I HAVEN'T. which is a travesty.

i would call you but i don't know how to talk. it looks like we're screwed.
