Dubious Flavor

Utada performed the original version of "Flavor of Life" on CDTV the other night.  The good news is that the original version is an improvement over the ponderous 'ballad version', alleviating the blandness with some punchy dance beats and electronic effects.  Her vocal performance here was fair to middling; Utada's always had a weak upper register ( Read more... )

I still haven't heard the original version of "Flavor of Life" and the YouTube link you posted has already been removed. I'm sure it'll be a smash no matter what. Boy is the world unfair!

I saw the "evolution" performance and I didn't quite like how Ayu sounded. Then again, I've always thought that's a difficult song to perform.

What I'm really ga-ga over right now is Ai Otsuka's ultra-gay performance of "CHU-LIP," complete with bearded drag queen! I never thought an Ai Otsuka song would become one of my early favorites of 2007 since I pretty much don't care for the rest of her stuff.

Oh Edo, I know you're ga-ga over the bearded men, but honestly now! I'm trying to avoid listening to "CHU-LIP", cause I don't want it to grow on me. I find the chorus annoying, but the big band parts are subversively catchy.
