I want to talk about someone making a decision that upset me and the boundaries between them being allowed to have their own autonomy and make their own decisions with support and without judgement and me feeling disappointed and upset and as though they as making a huge mistake ( Read more... )

Don't feel guilty. There's nothing wrong with looking out for yourself and setting boundaries.

I've been there with someone very close to me; it's not only ok for you to feel/act that way, but in a lot of these situations it's the healthiest and maybe really the only thing you can do.

(I don't know the specifics of your case, obviously, but I will say: I backed the hell off when my sister was making bad, bad life decisions, even though I wanted to help/protect/confront/lots of other things, but let her know if it got bad enough I'd be there for emotional support (or to pick her and the kids up and get them out), and she got out eventually. So... a bunch of tmi about my family life there, but it boils down to: people will make the choice they make and don't let it eat you up.)
