Summary: Leslie visits Ben in Washington.
Ron came with her to the airport this morning. Leslie had expected him to drop her off at the curb but instead he gave airport security the evil eye until they let him sit at the gate with her, airport security be damned. After all that, he didn’t actually have much to say, and his personal security guard wouldn’t let him whittle, and the whole situation was so awkward that for once Leslie was really tempted to ask Ron Swanson to leave her alone.
But right before she got on the plane to Washington, he’d hugged her and said, “No matter what, Leslie, you are way better than Washington.”
With her feet on Pawnee soil, it had seemed silly. Anyway, of course Ron would prefer her to the city that stands for the United States government.
Now, though, after Ben has taken her on a whirlwind tour of his office, walked her past the White House and in through Congress, after she’s shaken hands with half a dozen senators, all of whom she’s watched on C-SPAN, Leslie slumps into the backseat of the taxi and tries to convince herself Ron was right.
The Lincoln Memorial whizzes by. The taxi driver honks at some pedestrian, who gives the taxi the finger. It’s the only thing, aside from Ben, that has reminded Leslie of Pawnee today, and the only reminder that isn’t slumped into his corner of the taxi, eyelids drooping. His hand is heavy and limp over hers in the empty middle seat. Leslie turns her eyes back to the Washington skyline. The sun has started dipping towards the horizon and all the buildings look so much bigger than they did in the postcards Ben has been mailing.
By the time they get back to the hotel, Ben’s actually asleep. She squeezes his fingers and only feels a little bit badly when he bangs his head on the ceiling. Shouldn’t he be excited, after all those sexy texts and Skype sessions, to actually have his girlfriend in Washington?
He holds her hand until he can’t unlock the door. Leslie’s been walking around Pawnee without Ben holding her hand, but her palm feels weirdly clammy as it hits her thigh, her fingers brushing against her favorite pencil skirt.
He takes her hand again, though, as he leads her up the stairs, one flight turning into two, then three, and now Leslie wishes she’d taken a nap in the sofa because her suitcase is banging against the stairs and her arm is sore from carrying it and her head is starting to ache and her stupidly amazing boyfriend definitely likes Washington more than her.
He turns back towards her, though, when they reach the fourth floor, and he gives her that stupid amazing little smile she loves so much.
“I hope it’s okay that I live on the fourth floor,” he says.
“As long as nobody’s going to spill boiling oil me.” She tries to smile but it’s hard because at this point, oil burns don’t seem quite out of the picture.
“You’re safe here,” he tells her, and she decides to believe it, following him into his hallway and then a few steps to his apartment.
He opens the door and her jaw drops.
There are candles and rose petals and Sarah MacLachlan’s playing and there’s a bowl of ice with three whipped cream containers and it’s official, Ben Wyatt is the best.
She opens her mouth to tell him that, or tell him she loves him, or even just to say awww, but what comes out instead is, “I thought you were going to dump me.”
He doesn’t say anything for a minute, and in that minute, she’s overcome with the horrible idea that yeah, he was about to dump her like an evil genius by reminding her what an incredible boyfriend he’s always been.
Then Ben turns to her, smiling that smile again.
“How could you think that? I haven’t been able to fall asleep for the past week, just thinking about you being in Washington.” So that explains the cab ride. And the rose petals. And everything, really.
She takes a step closer towards him. Suddenly she really wants to minimize the space between them, it’s like all the nights of being alone in bed hit her all at once and she just wants him as close as possible. Apparently Ben feels the same way because now his arms are around her and, pressed up against the length of him, Leslie realizes that, in fact, Ben is very excited to see her.
His lips are a little chapped but that’s okay, they’re Ben’s lips against hers, his tongue sneaking into her mouth, his arms lowering her onto the carpet. For one second she forgets that April and Andy don’t live here, and then she remembers that she’s in Washington and then she just works on loosening his tie.
She forgets about the tie the minute he gets her skirt over her hips and his fingers are inside her underwear and apparently he hasn’t forgotten that twist of her fingers that makes her see actual five-pointed stars. And fair’s only fair, so it’s only a matter of time before Leslie figures out his fancy new Washington belt and his pants are down by his knees and she’s on top of him, quick and dirty, which maybe didn’t used to be her favorite way except that it’s Ben and he’s right here with her, inside of her and also his fingers are playing with her hair and oh god did she miss his voice, she heard it on the phone but not just the sound of it, not without words and saying oh god Leslie and his i love you never sounded quite like that, especially now that it’s right up against her ear.
With a groan he relaxes against her and she arches and she’s coming, she’s coming, and she’s here, right in Ben’s arms, curled up on the carpet of his fancy new Washington apartment, her skirt bunched up around her stomach and her curls half undone. The apartment is full of their breaths, even louder than Sarah MacLachlan. She missed the sound of his breathing.
Back in Pawnee, Leslie had all kinds of plans for sightseeing on this trip, but at this moment, her fingers tangled with Ben’s, she’s not sure she wants to move an inch.
...And there's a bonus adventure!
