Ooh, lovely, and how well timed for meeeee, since I only finished the awesome 'Howling' a couple of weeks ago, so it's like practically no waiting at all! Also very cool how artfully this embeds the previous events ... and I love that the whole 'Howling' story spills out, how much that says about what the two of them are together. I was surprised, and then I totally wasn't. And Mitchell's response is glorious.

A quiet reaffirmation that they are a them, that there will be a future, that everything is going to be all right. / Doesn't mean it's going to be easy. Just that it's going to be possible. -- Mmmmm, yes.

I lovelovelove the description of his relationship with Sara, the mistakes he's not going to make again, and how it's cast as his relationship, integral to who he is, not someone else. And that he's never referred to by name in this. And the last two paragraphs -- ::adores::.

Totally gratifying as aftermath and weaving-together and new beginning.

Eee, thank you! Yeah, I knew it was going to be really important to JD to tell Cam exactly what happened, how everything went down, as soon as possible, because he remembers how he used to be with Sara (whom he loved, very much so, and he knows that relationship died at least partially due to his own reticence in ever discussing anything with her) and he's not going to make the same mistake twice. And, well, there's that voice in the back of his head that says that Mitchell is going to freak out at everything he did -- whether the reality of what he had to do, or the fact that he made that unilateral decision about the sarcophagus, thus condemning Cam to having to put up with all that physical impairment -- and there's a part of him waiting for the other shoe to drop. And if it's going to drop, he'd rather it drop quicklyPoor JD -- there's a lot of Jack in him anyway, obviously, given the continuity of memory, but right now he's rather vulnerably back to being almost-Jack again, no matter how much he's tried to clear it out of his ( ... )

This is the first thing I've read today, and I read it twice straight through and once more after I had a chance to look at the mail, and there's not a wrong word in it.

(I am, however, just waiting to see how JD reacts to AJ's babysitter. And I don't suppose the President will call up Momma to say nice things about JD, more's the pity...)

Thank you!

JD is not going to be happy with AJ's babysitter, no. He's certain she's a very nice girl. And he's happy Cam had company while he was gone. But ... (He is Not Jealous Dammit.)

And no, JD's on his own with making his peace with the family. Which is also going to be fun. *g*

Oh, these guys just break my heart.

It's interesting to note just how much more...vulnerable they are, as opposed to Cammie/JD. They just feel more fragile to me. There's more of an "us against the world" mentality here.

O'Neill having the President call was priceless, and such an O'Neill gesture.

AJ is going to be the happiest baby ever now.

Thank you!

I think one of the reasons why they seem so much more vulnerable than the Cammie and JD of Mezzanine is that they love so much more deeply and strongly -- not that Cammie and JD don't love each other, but Cam and JD have this air of desperation to them, like it's back-to-back against the world, and it makes them that much more fierce in defending each other and the life they've built. Cam's JD is so much more open than Cammie's, because while Cammie's love for JD (and his love for her) is strong, it's not as transformative or as challenging (in the sense of Cam challenging him to keep up, etc). It's very odd; I can trace most of it back to the fact that Cam is everything JD (Jack) always wanted, while Cammie is just most of it and JD knows he's going to have to look elsewhere for the rest ...

AJ is like "oooh, yay, my grownup came home!"
