Syn, It may look longer, but trust me on this: take 35 North to Oklahoma City then 40 West to Amarillo. The route is a little longer, but you'll get there faster, becuase taking the state hiways you'll find 1 or 2 stops lights and a dairy queen in every freakin' small town along the way, plus the speed limits keeps dropping down for every town; Take the interstates, it's longer but you'll be able to go much, much faster.
You mentioned San Jose below; I'll reiterate that San Jose is well out of your way and Sacramento is a better bet for a straight shot through. If you're working out fuel costs, gas in the region is approx. $2.30 a gallon, so compare this+ability to crash at someone's place with hotel costs in Sacramento.
If hitting the Bay is cheaper, take 152 west off of 5 to US 101 north to San Jose/Mountain View/whatever, and then US 101 N to 92 E to 880 N to 80 E to 5 N to get back on track.
