Despite his brain screaming at him that he promised not to forget Zacky, Brian found himself melting into the kiss. Bringing his free hand up to Matt's cheek. Slipping his tongue through Matt's soft, yet firm, lips. Shivering when Matt's tongue brushed against his. Biting back a moan when his bottom lip was captured between Matt's teeth. Feeling more than a little more disappointed when Matt finally pulled away.
The look that flashed through Matt's hazel eyes was a mixture of horror, desire, disbelief, lust and shame. They sat staring at each other, not saying anything for several moments. Brian patiently waited for the whole "I'm not gay" rant. He'd received it many times before. From guys that he'd slept with. He kept his gaze on Matt even when Matt finally had the decency to look away and cast his eyes to the sand.
"I'm sorry," Matt whispered in a pained voice. "I heard when you said you have a boyfriend. I don't know what came over me. I feel so ashamed. Please forgive me. It will never happen again. I assure you."
Brian blinked at the contrite male in front of him. Matt was obviously forgetting that Brian had kissed him back. Matt wasn't the only one in the wrong. If anything, Brian was worse. He was the one in the relationship. At least he believed so. He didn't think Matt had someone. He opened his mouth to ask when Matt started talking again.
"I'm not even gay..."
Brian snorted. "Then why did you kiss me?"
"I don't know... Something about your lips..." Matt's voice trailed off.
Brian felt a surge of sympathy of him. He knew what it was like to experience an attraction to someone of the same sex for the first time. How awkward and confusing it could be.
"Let's forget it ever happened." Brian suggested. "It's not going to happen again, so let's drop it." As he said those words he kind of felt like a hypocrite. He was actually wondering if he could get Matt in bed before he went back home. And although he promised Zacky he would never forget him, and told him he loved him, he couldn't help but wonder about Matt's sexual abilities. He wondered if he preferred bottom or top. If he was a screamer. It he was a virgin. He bit his lip trying to physically force those thoughts from his mind.
Matt nodded his agreement. "Yes, let's."
The silence that settled on the two was a tad awkward; Brian didn't like it. This one kiss could ruin any chance they had at being friends. And Brian wanted to be friends, even if they didn't end up sleeping together. Brian wanted to be able to call Matt his friend. the two males stared at each other while their cigarettes smoked away, being held in their fingers. Brian decided to break the unwelcomed silence.
"I have a puppy," he whispered.
There was visible relief on Matt's face at the change of subject. "You do?"
Brian nodded. Somewhere in his mind, it registered that Matt sitting shirtless in front of him. He pushed all thoughts of Matt's chest and stomach from his mind as he pulled his phone out of his pocket. "Her name's Pinkly. she's only a few weeks old. She's a white Maltese." He unlocked his phone and went into his picture folder to find some pictures of her to show him. He found one where he was holding the tiny ball of fur gently in his arms. He handed the phone to Matt and he smiled.
"She's precious." Matt said.
Brian smiled, blushing a little. He liked when people complimented the sole love of his life. "Thanks," he replied. "I... I really love her. She's my baby. I'd protect her with my life. Pinkly Haner is my pride and joy."
Matt smiled at Brian. "Yeah?" He flipped through more pictures. "That's really sweet, Brian."
"I miss her."
"I totally get that. But, as you may know, my dad's allergic to dogs..."
"Yeah, I know. My mom told me," Brian replied, nodding slowly. "That's why I didn't bring her. Besides, she's only a few weeks old. a plane ride across states might not be good for her." A few tears sprang to Brian's eyes. It's only been -hell less than a day and he's already missing Pinkly enough to cry? Fuck.
Matt placed a comforting hand on Brian's shoulder. "Hey... don't cry. These six months will be over before you know it and you'll be back with her. Okay? You'll be home to her soon." Matt tossed his cigarette onto the sand and stomped it out. Then he leaned forward, capturing Brian in a warm embrace.
Brian didn't immediately respond, but when he did, he dropped his cigarette and returned Matt's hug. He felt safe in Matt's arms. Like nothing could hurt him. Like Matt was protecting him. It was a feeling he hadn't realized he missed.
Brian sighed, relaxing into Matt's strong arms. He never wanted to let go. Never wanted Matt to let go. He'd never felt so comforted in his life. Knowing Matt understood how much he missed Pinkly made him want to cry more. No one ever understood his love for his dog. Now this practically stranger was consoling him with hugs and soothing words. In that moment, that brief moment, he'd never loved any human being as much as he loved Matt..
So it really is no surprise that Brian kissed him.
*****************
Matt couldn't help thinking how wrong this was. Brian was in a relationship. Matt wasn't gay or even bi. So why did he find himself slowly moving his lips in time with Brian's? Pulling Brian closer to deepen the kiss? Slipping his fingers through Brian's think dark hair? Tangling his tongue with Brian's in a sloppy fight for dominance?
Matt had already kissed loads of girls. But none of those times could compare to the kiss he was sharing with Brian. It felt right, somehow. He felt his heart flutter against his ribcage.
The two sprang apart when Brian's phone began to ring. Matt took a few deep, gasping breaths. Brian muttered 'shit' when he looked down at the phone.
"Hey, babe," he said when he answered the call.
Matt blushed furiously when he realised that it must be Brian's boyfriend calling. Shit. Fuck. How could he let himself be drawn in for a second time? It wasn't even midday yet and he's kissed a guy who was taken twice. And he hadn't hated it. He loved it. He wanted more. He felt like he needed to kiss Brian again.
When Matt faintly heard the "I love you too, Zacky." in the midst of his thoughts he felt like the most despicable human in the world. He hated himself. Loathed. Despised. Something about Brian just kept drawing him in, and he could do nothing to stop it.
Brian hung up and Matt hid his face in his hands. It didn't matter if Brian had kissed him first this time. Matt actually kissed him back.
"I'm sorry," the two males said simultaneously. They chuckled awkwardly.
"No," Brian said finally. "I really am sorry, I shouldn't have kissed you. Forgive me?" He rubbed his well kept goatee as he looked at Matt.
Matt nodded. "Of course.."
"I don't know about you, but I'm getting kinda hungry."
Matt allowed himself a small grin. "Yeah, me too. Where do you wanna eat?"
Brian shrugged. "I'm not picky."
Matt had to laugh. "Dude? You nearly bit off my mom's head because of your room. And you want to say you're not picky? C'mon. Gimme another lie."
"About that," Brian began. "It was all staged. I may be gay but not gay enough to care about how badly colors in a room clash."
Matt stared at Brian with something akin to awe. Brian didn't even care about the appearance of the room and yet he told his mom off about it. A slow smile blossomed on his features when he realized what a badass Brian really was.
"Why?" Matt asked.
Brian shrugged a shoulder lazily. "I felt like she and your dad were challenging me to say something wrong about the room. So I did."
Matt reached for his shirt; put it on and stood to his feet. "You're one crazy motherfucker, dude." He smiled. "I'm glad you're here."
And it was true. Matt didn't think he would be, but he was. He was very glad Brian were here. He imagined having loads of laughs at Brian smart-assing his parents. Maybe some of Brian's confidence would rub off on him.
Brian smiled up at Matt before standing as well. "I'm glad I'm here too."
Matt stuck his hands in his front pockets. "Even though you miss Pinkly? And..." He felt a lump in his throat but he managed to speak past it. "And Zacky..?"
"Yes."
Matt beamed. The two males walked back to his car, chatting as if they knew each other forever. Matt talked about living about two strict parents. Brian talked about living with one push-over parents and his dog. Matt felt tempted to ask Brian more personal details, but what else was there to know? Brian was taken and gay. But, was he a virgin? Matt didn't need to know that. Did he bottom or top? Did he have a filthy mouth in bed? Matt definitely didn't need to know that.
But he wanted to.
The two men got into the car to go search for a restaurant. The idea of Brian yelling profanities while being fucked senseless kept replaying in Matt's mind.
