Ugh. The government of this country is entirely staffed by idiots!

Listen to this, you fat, stupid, overpaid bunch of morons:
We did not need 42 days' detention when the IRA were planting explosives across the country, and we do not need it now!Every one of you bastards who voted for this bloody bill, you are driving us straight into Nineteen ( Read more... )

The Irish were a better class of bastard though. They'd at least ring up giving warnings they were going to blow shit up. Muslim extremists don't give warnings and they try to kill as many people as possible. That said 42 days is excessive. Unless the ultimate question is "how many days should we detain terrorists?"

Oh pfft. You were much more at risk of being blown up when the IRA were in town than you are by this petty, disorganised bunch of fanatics.

The question we should be asking is "Why the bloody hell are our incompetent Police force incapable of pulling together the evidence they need in a reasonable time frame like every other civilised country on the planet? We're now looking at longer detention times than China.

I was wondering if this was a cheaper way around the issue of gathering evidence. Lock people up for longer, rather than give extra resources to the investigators.

But then I have a slight reputation for cynicism at times.

I think that the most obvious reason the police have trouble getting intel together in time is that very few of them with the right security levels read or speak Arabic or Urdu. Any IRA documents recovered would at least be in English.

But the real problem is that the IRA needed detailed plans for getting away from the xplosion - these guys want to die so only need half the planning.

How much planning did the IRA put into 'park van outside M&S, bugger off'?

You have a very good point on the languages front - but the crapness of our police is the issue there - how much would it take to train people in those languages?

Also, I'm fairly sure they must have a fair amount of evidence before they go round someone's house with the big red door knocker. I still say it would be 'fairer' to allow post charge questioning.

well, if you are worried about "1984", come to Germany. Our lovely Home Secretary is planning to send trojans around the countries email addresses in order to be able to sneak around our computers. All in the name of anti-terrorism of course. Also, the phrase "innocent until proven guilty" is not meant to be taken seriously in case of terrorists. He wants to rebuilt our state into a "prevention" and "security" state ( ... )

Those sound awfully familiar. And we don't even have a constitution that has to be got round. Where are you on snooping on the contents of rubbish bins? Apparently now all bins are now being manufactured with chips to monitor what is put in them.

Now that's just cynical!!

Actually, and this is not necessarily a bad thing, we have people walking around our neighbourhoods snooping around our bins, but, this is all hidden under environmental concerns.
Our bins get regularly checked for contents that should be in a different kind of bin, so if you bin a yoghurt pot and someone finds out, you're paying a heavy fine.

But that's an entirely different topic.
