360 cardinal points of a compass

Okay, so I am looking through navigational tools, and trying to figure out how the ancient travelers used compassed to sail the world. I was reviewing the letters used in the eastern side of this compass and the letters spell out an order of the Nazarenes or Esoteric sect. There was also a Jewish Brotherhood who used the order of the Essenes. Maybe this is some type of longitude or meridian point lines. Like the three magi that followed the eastern star. I really think this is all astrology or astronomy. Maybe this is some type of cipher in the name. Why did they choose this particular name Essenes? East South South East North East South. Maybe these are particular points on earth, on the body or in the heavens. Maybe the opposite in the nw side is key to something. West North North West South West North. Pliny the Elder known astrologist, geographer and explorer named the Essenes people to be located in the desert near the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in the year 1947 ( ... )
