unitarians reject that def. of religion--they think it is oppressive. To be fair, hinduism, for instance, pretty much is a whatever religion too--they just happen to have common beliefs sort of because historically they all lived in the same area. In fact, hinduism was just the colonizers word for the religion they found in the entire Indus valley. highly ad hoc. That said, I too think unitarians are silly. But it is mostly because I feel like they don't know how to have fun or do anything without the religion paradigm and I think life is too damn great to be stuck in that meet on sunday crap anyway.
i think the unitarians are really cool. they have their beliefs, but they dont put other people down for having different beliefs. its a very live and let live type of religion, which is hard to find nowadays, or historically.

Have you ever hung out with real unitarians? It is kind of live and let live, but (at least for the midwest ones I have known) totally in this normality paradigm still. They won't ask you out to play pool or get a beer or coffee and they keep trying to get you to come to prayer group to read the tao te ching &/or Richard Bach tripe or do a bake sale or just come to their pseudo worship thing. And when you try to get them to do activist shit despite environmentalism being one of their "faith"'s central tenets, they are all scared of anything more than a dippy boring ass lecture
