Fascinating

So, I'm always fascinated by people who somehow manage to develop the ultimate online advertising gimmick*. Take one helping of "cute!", add a few dashes of "have to keep up with it", and sprinkle liberally with "addictive." Then, add advertising. The users/players keep coming back, the unique views/clicks/views keep going up, and the owners rake ( Read more... )

Re: your first footnote. I'd noticed at book club that my use of the word "gimmick" was taken to mean a bad thing, when I didn't necessarily mean it that way. So today, I figured I'd look up the technical definition to figure that out. Apparently, the original use (1926) was "a device used for making a fair game crooked." I tend to think of it more as "an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, esp. one designed to attract attention or increase appeal."

huh. Iiinteresting... I also think of "gimmick" as a "device, scheme, or stratagem, esp. one designed to attract attention or increase appeal." But, minus the "ingenious or novel," and it has a connotation of "scam."

That's a good point. I guess I do look at "gimmick" as a bad thing. Connotatively, I'm used to associating it with cheap marketing ploys. They need to use gimmicks to get you to purchase something that otherwise isn't worth it. I like your (aka the original) definition better, even if others may not take it for that.

I don't have an incubator, but I have a scroll here: http://dragcave.net/user/Sailormom
That has all my dragons on it.

Dragonspam is a LJ community, http://community.livejournal.com/dragonspam/
They have been REALLY helpful with the hatching and growing of my babies, and the rules, and with some of the breeding efforts :)

In order for a site like this to exist and thrive, I think it required the advent of social networking sites like LiveJournal.
