[To be honest, the whole thing about the portal was really making him curious. Sure, he spoke to some people who thought it was a joke. [Standing back is definitely a good course of action, in Usopp's humble opinion- even if he had to move closer than he'd been earlier in order to keep his eye open. He'd kind of wanted to get a closer look anyway, without having to get too close to the ones pushing people in. He'll be standing nearby.]
