Physical Appearance: Official box art || Fanart

History: When KAITO was first created, he was meant to be the male alternative to MEIKO. Released a little more than a year after her, his robotic voice was used in a few songs as a backup vocalist. Although they were well received by the public, they were never able to break any ground as musicians. Their popularity was restricted to the few who hired them or the few who became fans. Still, there were moments when they weren't singing for anyone. Such moments served as an opportunity for him to explore and learn many other things from his master, including the discovery of his favorite food. This trend continued on for more than a year.

One day, a new Vocaloid was created. Using advanced vocal technology, the company decided to expand on Kaito and Meiko to create the first of what would be called the Vocaloid2 series. This newcomer was designed differently -- more like a pop idol than a backup singer. Her voice was cute and less robotic than the older two, thanks to the improvements in science. Her physical design, including her trademark costume, was more detailed. With her bright demeanor she stood out against the crowd, programmed to sing and dance and attract people in a way Kaito and Meiko couldn't.

Her name was Hatsune Miku. When she was first introduced to the two older Vocaloids, she addressed Kaito as "older brother". It marked the beginning of their new family.

Miku's raging popularity prompted the company to create release an additional pair of Vocaloids -- twins Kagamine Rin and Len. They were the second set in the Vocaloid2 series. Just as Miku did, they also called Kaito their older brother. Together, the five of them lived and played the way a family usually did. He was often used as a target for the twins' pranks or for someone to confide in. Even though he was also somewhat childish, he fulfilled his duties as the silly, older brother very well. There weren't too many complaints and -- although he was a little envious of the younger siblings' popularity -- he enjoyed the moments when they were able to sing together.

Inevitably, the spotlight shining on his siblings began to shine on him as well. People began to notice Kaito's talent. The younger Vocaloids had a more human sound, but had a limited vocal range and were most suited to certain genres. On the other hand, Kaito (and Meiko) had an expansive vocal range and could be adjusted for any genre. Producers began to use his voice, uploading various songs and listening to him perform. With enough practice, other users were able to upload various types of music that pushed his abilities farther than what was originally expected. He was able to sound smooth and human-like for pop ballads, gentle and cheerful for children's songs, or rough and robotic for rock and dance music. Soon, he was becoming almost as popular as his siblings. As the only adult male of the group, he was used as a balance in a number of duets.

But the company didn't stop there. Continuing to ride on the popularity of the Vocaloids, they released another one; this time, it was an adult male whose voice was based on a popular celebrity. Kaito couldn't help but wonder if this Vocaloid was going to end up replacing him. His fans were adamant that Kaito's unique voice couldn't be replaced, but the thought occured nonetheless. In the end, there was no need for him to worry. The new Vocaloid, Kamui Gakupo, had an extremely distinctive voice that was unique in it's own right. Kaito's fears were alleviated, and he enjoyed his duets with Gakupo as much as he did with the others.

Eventually, another Vocaloid was added to the group with a even more developed processor than the others. Megurine Luka, a Vocaloid with the smooth voice of an adult female, was introduced soon after the new male. With her ability to sing in two languages, she became incredibly popular to the point of knocking out some of Miku's most famous songs. Kaito was concerned about Miku's reaction, but Miku didn't take any offense to the standings. Instead, she complimented Luka's talent. It rested any further thoughts about being forgotten; he realized that no matter how many new Vocaloids would be produced, they would still have their fans and their own voices. As long as there were still people who wanted to compose music for them and hear them sing, they would always be in existence.

With that lesson learned, he continued to sing as both a soloist and as a part of the Vocaloid family. When he heard about another Vocaloid in development, he was just as excited as the other siblings.

Personality: Kaito is usually very upbeat and somewhat simple-minded. Other than singing, he enjoys eating ice-cream the most. It's possible for him to eat other things, but he would rather eat ice-cream for breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, and dessert. It's one of his weaknesses, something that he can't resist. (His master was the one who introduced the snack to him, but soon began to regret it as Kaito continued to request, ask, and plead for more.) If he's ever in a bad mood, a nice song or tasty ice-cream can bring him out of his funk. He's rarely ever in an extremely depressed state of mind. Even if it does happen, his family is there to help cheer him up.

As the older brother, he has a sense of maturity that the younger ones don't have. He helps take care of them (as much as he can) and offers advice (that may or may not be helpful). He isn't as naive and innocent as Miku or the twins, but he is, admittedly, not as mature as Meiko can be. His childish side often surfaces in the most inconvenient ways. At times, he can be stubbornly persistant, whiny, and absurdly silly. His sense of timing also leaves much to be desired. He's also used as the punching bag for the rest of the family, both younger and older. If he were in a sitcom, he would be the comic relief. Meiko manages to keep him in line using death threats. Despite this side of him, he does take his role as the elder brother seriously. Should anything ever happen, he and Meiko are the ones who stand and take responsibility.

Out of all the other Vocaloids, Kaito is the one who is closest to his master. His loyalty and support towards the master is another character trait of his.
