Calamity... What's wrong with America??

Sep 02, 2005 09:32

I feel the need to rant about the generalized American syndrome of detachment - the mall culture, the me-me-me, self-absorption of our culture. I bet if I drove to the mall right now, there'd be a bunch of high-maintenance women sipping lattes, getting their hair extensions fixed, shopping for $200 jeans, and $175 shoes, and talking on cell phones ( Read more... )

The Benefit Concert thing bugs me, too. Why don't those celebs donate out of their millions as well? (I know SOME of them do, but...)

These are some thought-provoking paragraphs.

very thought provoking. the other day i sat around not wanting to watch tv, feeling selfish for every thought i had. i don't know what to do! so yes, i can donate to the red cross, which i'm thinking i will do. beyond that, it still isn't fair that i have running water and people there have nothing. i can just pray... you're right though that americans shop as a coping mechanism. i was even taught this to an extent by my mother who wanted to escape the house from my alcoholic dad! it doesn't mean it's right though, and i've had to deal with that through the years. sometimes i think a lot of us don't know what to do, so nothing is done at all. at least to pray is a big step, and to feel and care about it.

I think I'm most angry at the TV stations for not showing more respect for the victims of this disaster - it's like it's just a Made for TV Movie about a natural disaster in the "deep south." At least during 9/11 they stopped airing trite commercials every five minutes out of respect for the disaster. I suppose because that was hitting them right at home there in NYC. If they really HAVE to air commercials to keep their tv shows on the air, couldn't they at LEAST make some effort to do something useful with the money they're profiting from? I mean, you KNOW those big tv networks are making a profit all the time - but this time in the nation's history, you'd think they'd be willing to break even or take a loss, to get rid of all the tacky advertising ( ... )

I'm on call to go fish dead bodies out of the nasty waters.

I figure . .
that will be a good way to help?

Not that it's my choice. ..
just my job . . .

Hopefully, I won't have to. I, honestly, am not excited about doing that. As much as I enjoy forensics & such things -- bodies with skin peeling off & where it's really not safe to be (for anyone, esp enforcement) -- ugh..that is not my idea of helping out. THough .. it needs to be done & Georgia Bureau are doing their part. I rather dish out of my bank account. We'll see which one I have to do. I'm thinking -- they'll take all the men before me -- to do that & this is one time - where I pray that they pick the men first.

Selfish? Probably.
Eager to get out of law enforcement? Totally. (one more month & counting)

I agree with all the aforementioned statements.
I do.
