I had a rat named Syphilis. Who, unfortunately, died, but not of syphilis.

Arthur Rimbaud did not die of syphilis.
He died of synovitis (a type of gangrene) which developped into a cancerous tumour. All of his siblings died of the same thing.

However, Baudelaire, Maupassant and Gauthier all died of syphilis.
