TOP 5 :: true blood characters with short explanations
I've been thinking of making this for a long time now, but I came to the conclusion it would have been stupid to make it mid-season which is why I waited till I was done with season 3 :) I suspect the list will change dramatically come S4, but like, whatever!
05: Rene Lenier
Looking back, I probably should have known he'd be the bad guy of season 1, but I gotta admit, I just had no clue even though I'm usually pretty good at guessing (or seeing) these things from the get-go. I don't know what it was about this character (looked good, sexy voice, seemed like a decent, nice family-guy?), but I loved the whole package the moment I saw him and that really should have been a hint big enough to make me realize he'd either end up a) wasted, b) being a totally fucked up jackass or c) both, which is exactly what happened and it totally broke my heart, despite everything. Honestly, I think it was what made me take a break from this series to begin with; I mourned for the loss!
04: Eric Northman
So, I didn't think much of Eric in the beginning; I mean, sure, he looked hot right from the start but it was seeing him with Godric that made me see Northman as a multi-dimensional character with a complicated past instead of a heartless son of a bitch who cares of nothing and no one. I may not like the fact every guy in the series seems to fancy Sookie at one point or another, but at least his feelings -or lust- towards the girl is a lot more interesting and entertaining to watch than Bill's... I love the fact this one is sneakily smart (and ruthless; if there's something he wants, he does it) and though you have your suspicions, you never quite know on whose side he is or what his plan will be. Plus, his relationship with Pam is quite similar to his relationship with Godric, only reversed, and I dig that, too.
03: Sam Merlotte
I really can't believe Sam's on my list. Seriously. Can't. But it doesn't change the fact he somehow grew on me during season 3 whereas in the season 1 I thought he was more like... pathetic. And whiny. He got points for being a cute dog, but that was pretty much it. But then, it was surprising (and nice!) seeing him move on instead of crushing on Sookie till the end of time and the more we find out of his past, the more curious I get. I came to the conclusion he's quite likable; he's a nice guy with a big heart and shit loads of hidden issues and the mix gives him the kind of depth and inner conflicts to deal with that I personally enjoy watching (and writing about). He doesn't want to get attached or let people too close because he's afraid he'll get hurt, but at the same time, he can't help but care and him taking care of Arlene's kids and saving Tommy just proves that. What also made me super glad was that Sam wasn't stupid enough to think his biological parents would somehow magically change - there was no unconditional love or feelings of duty from his side. And hey, he took Tommy under his wing and made my world so much better by doing so.
02: Tommy Mickens
vaarna knows me too well; Tommy Mickens is just the kind of character that catches me eye and wins me over by simply acting like a stupid teenager just because he's too afraid and hurt. He acts tough and pretends to be okay, but inside, he's so fucked up and broken that you can't help but love (and relate to) him. I think the scene in which Sam got drunk and told Tommy to get the fuck away sums up everything I have to say... I actually had tears in my eyes when he bent down to pick the notebook up, going, "hey, look, I'm not mad anymore!" and the look on his face, the pain... just everything. I can relate so well to what the character must have been thinking and feeling at that moment - I could analyze that scene for hours, I tell you. Also, you know, he reminds me of Pyro, actually... I swear, if he's not on season 4, I might yet again take a break from the whole series.
01: Jessica Hamby
There's just something about Jessica that I love and adore. For one, she's a great example of character development - I mean, when compared to how she was when first introduced in the series, she's come a long, long way. Secondly, she always makes me either laugh, smile or tear up. She's cute, funny, sweet, but also tough if she needs to be. Then, of course, there's her honesty. The moment she told Hoyt she'd killed a trucker accidentally and that she would not stop drinking from humans, I couldn't have been happier for the fact she hadn't gone and lied (and then later on been caught and broken up with). In the beginning, I was actually afraid of getting attached to her because I feared they'd end up killing her the way they wasted Rene (I still fear she'll get hurt, in fact) - I mean, come on, think of Supernatural and Dean Winchester and just how long he got to play the part of step-dad. Yeah, exactly! I really didn't think Bill would have a daughter and Sookie a sort of stepdaughter for more than one or two episodes, the most. I'm glad I was mistaken.
the CHARACTERS who should have made it to the list but didn't would be Alcide, Hoyt and Talbot...
