Mamma Mia...

To be honest, I had no desire, whatsoever, to see this film. I was never a huge fan of ABBA, so I had that going against me. Another strike would be that I think movie musicals are, for quite the large percentage, abysmal pieces of dreck. I mean, there's just something wrong with someone walking down the street and just bursting into song. If ( Read more... )

While I like musicals (even the dreaded movie ones... and I would point out that Sweeney Todd was YOUR idea...), and like ABBA (not a die hard fan but...) I *AM* a die hard Colin Firth fan. Therefore... Colin Firth is in a movie and I will see it. I didn't actually expect him to be able to sing and was pleasantly surprised... I didn't expect him to be a high tenor though! Meryl Streep surprised the Hell out of me though! She has a speaking voice with a distinctly breathy quality and I did not think she would have a singing voice at all but she actually did pretty darn well. All of the characters did well and I liked the fact that they went out of their way to cast "real people" type voices instead of Sarah Brightman and Pavarotti wanna' be types. I think that actually made the movie a lot more fun.

Well, you already know I loved it. Of course I adore musicals on stage, on screen, in my livingroom, whatever. I saw an interview with Peirce Brosnan last week... I don't think we need to worry about him entering on a singing career any time soon. I was impressed with Meryl Streep and found "Winner takes it all" to be very expressive, it's such an emotional number, I think the choice of "screw the notes and go for it" was a good one.
That being said, Isn't it great there are enough movies for all of us (you will never get me to watch any of the "Jaws" movies.) I do however want to see the new batman movie, but I will wait till it comes out on DVD and see it in the comfort of my own home.. where I can turn it off if it becomes too much.

Meryl Streep had a surprisingly good voice.

She was training to become an opera singer when she was just a girl. :)

Aside from that though, I guess we're all entitled to our likes and dislikes. I'm glad you at least gave it a chance, something which many of my friends, who push me to watch movies I normally wouldn't, refuse to do.
