We visited grandmom's today, together with el Bro. We had quite fun, but every cloud has a silver lining: it became quite clear to us (that is to say me and the vet/wife) that Spurtti the Cat is dying. It seems that his kidneys are failing and he'll have a year left on the outside. That is, if he's properly treated. The problem here is grandmom. ( Read more... )

Our cat suffers from rhenal insufficiency, and with a carefully managed diet he is in very good health and spirits. Spurtti might be too far along for that, so your concerns about her ability to care for him may be valid, but I would definitely get him to a vet and figure out exactly how bad it is. Charlie almost died, but once they got him stable and put him on the special diet, he hasn't had any more episodes. If changing the food is all it takes to keep the cat stable, your grandma can probably do that.

I've found that some people won't trust the medical opinion of someone they know personally. You'd probably get better results if you took your grandmother and the cat to a neutral vet.
