After too much time of poverty coupled with indifference, I now want to go out and buy some new music. I've hooked up my stereo, which spent the past 2.5 years in a non-functional state. I'll have the office to myself, pretty much, for the next two weeks, so I need something to pass the time while waiting for updates on Wonkette. So, any ( Read more... )

I would recommend the new Lifetime record, but I know you're already on board with that one. 2007 hasn't been all that great for non-metal music, in my opinion. The best thing I've heard is the new Queens of the Stone Age and that's a real grower. It's taken me half a dozen listens to really embrace it. The Dinosaur Jr. record is pretty good and the new ones from Shellac and Spoon have their moments. One whole-hearted recommendation I can give you that's new-ish is a Canadian hardcore band, Career Suicide. The three songs on their website from the most recent record, Attempted Suicide are a good indication of what they're like at their best and I think it's pretty damn good melodic hardcore.

I've been listening to a lot of 90's rock lately. Seaweed, Les Thugs, Polvo, Bluetip and even a lot of Lungfish. I'm liking all those bands way more than almost any new stuff. Now metal, that's a whole 'nother ballgame. A lot of good stuff going on in that dept. I could write a 1500 word essay on all the metal stuff I've been discovering.

Lifetime: Only new CD I've gotten this year.
Spoon: False. Sorry, I still think these guys are way overrated. Even more so than since they stopped sounding like the Pixies.
QOTSA: I missed their last record. Maybe I'll check this one out.
Dino Jr.: Didn't like these guys in 1993, I don't think I'll like them now. Lou Barlow stole my look.
Career Suicide: Sounds good, but I'm wary of any new hardcore bands...

I forgot to mention, I'm still a bit jaded, which is why I stopped listening to new music and started watching sports. It's hard to explain, but too much 90's rock gets me really depressed...

I don't completely disagree with you about Spoon being overrated, but I didn't know you never really liked them. I'll always like Series of Sneaks and then only a handful of other songs from the records after that. I'd say Dino Jr.'s best stuff was pre-1990, so if you only heard was after Green Mind I can see why you didn't like them.

Try the new QOTSA and don't be wary of Career Suicide. I'm pretty jaded too maybe in a different way. All the twee pop and indie-hipsterism I see and hear in Seattle has driven me into the arms of metal. And not just extreme metal. I even checked out copies of early Iron Maiden and Judas Priest CDs from the library. 80's metal might even be more depressing than 90's rock...I dunno.
