AN: I got my self all worked up because I love this pairing, but I couldn’t find enough fanfiction on it, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. Please don’t flame me, for one, I’m a new writer, and two, I can’t handle people flaring up at me (I tend to shout back at them). But I would absolutely welcome constructive criticism, and please please please, tell me what you feel I’m doing right or wrong. Enjoy!
Chapter 1: What’s this?
Nakamaru Yuuichi strolled into the dressing-room, and was immediately pelted by dorky, OMG exclamations from his band-mates.
“What’s the date today? We must take note of this special day! Yuuchan is actually early for once!” screamed Jin.
“Has hell frozen over? Yuuchan hasn’t been early since….Have you ever been early, Yuuchan?” puzzled Koki.
“Iie, it must be because his sisters are bringing the house down, and ended up waking him way too early instead! I always had the suspicion that Yuuchan was adopted, his sisters are just too crazy in the morning, and yet he is so totally not a morning person!” confided Junno.
“Are you feeling alright, Yuuchan? I have to admit, although they may be exaggerating, it is a surprise to see you early for anything other than shopping” asked Kame.
Only Ueda walked over to clap a hand on his back, saying, “Good to see you early, Maru. Keep it up.” After this very bland statement (AN:he’s the leader, can’t afford to act like bakas…plus that’s how he seems to me :)) , Ueda went back to the couch to resume his nap before the day started.
Nakamaru felt amused by his band mates’ reactions, but he also felt weird after Ueda spoke to him. At Ueda’s touch, his mind seemed to have stopped functioning and he felt little butterflies in his stomach. Nakamaru shook his himself out of his mental reverie, and opened his mouth to explain, “Actually, I came early this time round ‘cause my family was going to Osaka to visit some relatives, and were leaving at 7. So they woke me up before they left.”
“Ah… so that’s the reason why you came early. I knew you’d never be able to do it on your own; you simply cannot help having a snooze unless someone came along and shook the sleep out of you.” Koki shuddered at the task of waking Nakamaru up, it was like fighting a dragon with a toothpick; anyone who attempted it risked their lives as Nakamaru had the tendency to flail at his “assailant”, and they often ended up with bruises and narrow escapes concerning their, ahem, manhoods.
Ignoring Koki, Nakamaru picked his way through the mess that seemed to be part of KAT-TUN’s ensemble wherever they went and sat with Ueda, lifting the raven-haired leader’s legs up and propping them upon his lap. Ueda didn’t even open his eyes to see what was going on, he recognised Nakamaru’s steps and let him do as he wished, secure in his familiarity with the older man.
For the remaining period of time KAT-TUN simply relaxed and joked around, relishing the extra time they got to spend with the entire band (with no late comers) and the added benefit of not dealing with harassed managers demanding to know the whereabouts of afore mentioned latecomers. Then, the peace was broken when the clock chimed half past eight, and off they went for a day of rehearsals, practice and yelling.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, their day of work ended. Everyone flopped onto the floor of the dressing room, too tired to do anything but complain. That day had been excruciating, not because of yelling and scolding, but because they were worked so hard they felt as though their limbs were about to drop off. Although intellectually they knew that standards and expectations were high because of the upcoming concert, they still could not restrain themselves from fantasising about punishing the trainers, ranging from a simple yelling (Ueda’s) to visions of stabbing them in the back and laughing maniacally while the blood pooled on the floor (Jin’s).
Stifling a groan, Nakamaru stood up and dragged himself to collect his duffel bag, in the process knocking a couple of magazines upon Koki’s head and earning himself an irritated glare. Shrugging it off, Nakamaru asked offhandedly, “Anyone wants to go out for dinner? I’ll be eating out since no one’s at home to cook, and I really don’t have any energy to spare for cooking.”
A chorus of “no, thanks you’s” answered him, with only Ueda taking up his offer. “I’ll come since we live in the same area, and anyway I’m getting really sick of my sister’s friends ogling at me everytime I’m at home…” That sentence trailed off when he saw Nakamaru changing his shirt; for a brief, tantalizing moment Ueda saw a bronzed expanse of skin, and felt an overwhelming desire to step forward and run his hands all over that spectacular back.
Just as quickly, he mentally slapped himself for thinking such inappropriate thoughts about his friend and blamed it on his extremely exhausted state of mind. When Nakamaru turned around, Ueda’s trademark poker face was back in place, if perhaps a little pinkish. Putting it down to lighting, Nakamaru scooped up his and Ueda’s bag, pausing for a moment to make sure that he had not forgotten anything, then strode out of the building with Ueda beside him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
“So, what do you want to eat, Tat-chan? You pick since I was the one who asked you out.” Nakamaru winced at how that sounded like he had asked Ueda out on a date. Thankfully, Ueda didn’t seem to notice, and replied, “Let’s eat Western today, it’s a nice change from home-cooked food.” “I know of a good restaurant nearby and the prices are not expensive either, wanna try that?” “Fine with me, let’s go.”
They spent a pleasant time chatting about inconsequential happenings over dinner and a bottle of red wine, resulting in two slightly high but not quite drunk young men. They were at the stage where they knew they were drunk but still had enough thought processes left to pay the bill and leave the restaurant without making asses out of themselves. Parting at the subway, they waved at each other before Ueda turned around and descended into the underground tunnel. Nakamaru watched till Ueda was out of his sight, feeling a slight tug at his heart before heading home.
Feeling a little unsteady on his feet at this point, Nakamaru couldn’t help thinking that something strange was going on. For one thing he felt as though the shadows were stalking him, and an odd sensation at the back of his mind made turn his head back ever so often to see if anyone was behind him. Not finding anyone following him, and putting it down to paranoia of paparazzi and alcohol, he made his way back to his home and entered his house after a few unsuccessful tries with the lock and key and many colourful curses. Dumping all his stuff on the floor, he went into the bathroom to take a cold shower to try and sober him up. It cleared his head sufficiently to allow him to do the laundry, clean up the place a little and then head back to his bed for some much deserved rest.
Unknown to him, a shadow stood outside his home, with its head tilted towards Nakamaru’s bedroom window. It whispered something under its breath before it vanished into the alleys that were Tokyo’s trademarks.
“Soon,” it thought. “Soon, you’ll be all mine and no one can stop us from being together. I won’t allow anyone to come between us anymore.”
