Drabble: Parterre

“Cookie!”

“Cookie!  Where are you?” a soft, slightly panicked voice called.

Kunimitsu looked up from his book.  Squinting his eyes, he tried to determine the owner of the familiar voice.

“Oh. Hello Kunimitsu.” A scrawny, effeminate boy whose blue eyes blinked uncertainly said.

Kunimitsu sighed, closing his book but making certain of the page first. It was the young heir of Wasteland, Fuji Syusuke. He had no doubt he wouldn’t be able to read it now.

“Good morning.” Kunimitsu replied politely, keeping his desperate eyebrow from twitching.

Without permission, Syusuke seated himself beside Kunimitsu and asked: “Have you seen Cookie?”

This time, Kunimitsu didn’t manage to stop his eyebrow.

“You should go to the kitchen if you want some cookies.” He replied stoically as if stating a fact.

Honestly! Kunimitsu could not believe that Syusuke was looking for a cookie here! Surely even five year-olds knew that cookies did not grow from trees...right?

The two boys were silent for a minute.

Satisfied that Syusuke wouldn’t be speaking anytime soon, Kunimitsu opened his book once more.

Syusuke was amused and shocked to say the least. He had not expected that. He wanted to laugh but that will be inappropriate.

Still, Kunimitsu was too cute and Syusuke decided that he liked the boy right then and there.

The hilarity of the situation was too much for Syusuke to take. Laughter bubbled out from his throat and Kunimitsu looked at him awkwardly.

“What’s funny?” Kunimitsu asked, intrigued. After all, wasn’t it normal to go to the kitchen for food?

“You. You’re too cute.” Syusuke explained in-between laughs.

Kunimitsu blinked. He had been described many things but cute was never one of them. At any rate, the word applied more to the young heir than to him.

Irked, he asked: “What do you mean?”

“Cookie...Cookie is a puppy.” Syusuke breathed out, a new wave of laughter overcoming his speech.

Kunimitsu opted not to reply. However, he could not forgive himself for letting his guard down. Of course Syusuke had more sense than to look for cookies in a garden.

“Will Kunimitsu help me find Cookie?”Syusuke asked innocently as the last of his laughs died away.

Kunimitsu wanted to say no. He really did. He wanted to finish the book his grandfather gave him because it might say something important. But then, he looked at Syusuke’s hopeful blue eyes and he found himself muttering a hesitant ‘okay’.

Syusuke’s eyes glimmered more and he hurriedly attached himself to Kunimitsu’s arm.

“Come on.” He said, dragging Kunimitsu up.

It had never occurred to Kunimitsu to be friends with the future duke. Truthfully, he was a bit surprised at the odd turn of events. He looked over to the other boy and seeing the genuine happiness there, a tiny smile worked its way on Kunimitsu’s lips.

Kunimitsu didn’t remember the book he left lying on the ground until he found it there several days later.

Kunimitsu also didn’t know that in the years to come, he would be wrapped even tighter around the Syusuke’s finger and would be unable to deny any request from him because of the heir’s soft smile and shining eyes.
