I've been overrun by little black ants. They started out in the bathroom, but now they're in the living room as well, encraoching closer and closer to my regular spot for sitting and putting together stuff, in front of the couch

Unfortunately, cats don't work for this particular type of infestation. I do count on my guys to take care of all my spiders, moths, and other larger bugs, though.
Most ant traps in stores around here are pretty animal safe, as the poison is a firm gel held in a resevoir covered by a low dome into which the ants crawl via small holes around the base. Unless the animal tries to eat the trap itself the poison is otherwise inaccessible to the pet.
Here's what I use. Pretty small, about a third of an inch thick, and about 1.5"x2" around. Effective too if you put them in the right spots. (Near doorways, window ledges, etc.) As I said, so long as you can keep the cats from chewing on them, they're safe to use around pets.
An old wive's tale that actually works...ants won't cross a bleach line, and cat's won't go near it. Put bleach in a spray bottle, set the nozzle to stream, and shoot a line wherever the little buggers are coming in, like door, and window thresholds. Usually good for about a week, then you have to repeat the process. A side benefit is that it always smells like you've just cleaned house :D
When you're done in the living room and whatnot, spray the foundation of the building you're in with diazinon. You should keep your cats inside for a day but it will kill just about any pest outside and keep killing them deep in the ground for 6 months or so. Spray about a foot or two out from the base. It's quite good stuff.
Ants seem to be the thing this year. Our deck and essentially the whole backyard has been taken over, and my friends in Edmonton also have their lawns overrun. Blasted creatures...

I noticed when there's some bug in my appartment, Emi will let me know (normally by the noise she makes trying to catch them).
