Hardware annoyances
Okay, too-long-too-geeky-too-techy-too-grumpy rant to follow.
I bought one of the new 802.11n Apple Airport Express boxes today. The data wiring in my house is all cat-3 or worse, which used to mean I kept a 10-megabit switch in the basement and starred everything off that. Spring
Today is the first day where the sun is in the sky more than 50% of the day. This happens before the equinox because of refraction effects of the earth's atmosphere and, I suppose, because the sun is not a point source of light.

More fun with Mac OS Leopard
I primarily use Macintoshes, but at work I use an external display and keyboard; the keyboard I happen to be using is a pretty nice one from a Dell PC. One problem with using PC keyboards on Macs is that the Alt key and Windows key (which maps to the Apple Command key) are swapped between the two keyboard layouts. Lunar eclipse
The last lunar eclipse of the decade is Wednesday night, with totality occurring around 9:30pm Central Time. It's supposed to be partly cloudy here; perhaps I'll get a good look at it. It's going to be so cold, as long as there is not a lot of cloud cover it should be a crisp night with good seeing. -

So the latest news is the gunman at the Northern Illinois University shootings yesterday afternoon had been a grad student at NIU, but was currently going to school here, in Urbana, at the University of Illinois.

Awesome work crises!
We came in today to find that our big wireless distribution tower on the south campus had toppled in yesterday's storm. There wasn't a lot of wind associated with the storm, though, so we're thinking some kind of structural failure and/or install problem.

Yet more weather news
Well, they have predicted us to be right in the middle of the heaviest band of snow from the approaching winter storm, with up to 12 inches of snow to fall overnight.
I'm starting to lose track of all this. It was really cold, then it got up into the 50's, then we had a thunderstorm with 60-knot winds that dropped the temperature by 15 degrees in ( Read more... )
