Looking back on it all, the entire thing had been a spectacularly bad idea, though it hadn’t technically been their idea at all because they were just out walking, just walking, because it had been a gorgeous day and he’d been convinced to lay aside paperwork and escape for a bit. But none of the what ifs, should have, could haves would help them now, because Kriem had found them and decided to have some fun. He’d panicked first, honestly, and had activated his powers and lunged at her, ignoring Kotetsu’s cries for him to wait. And really, they’d both underestimated her manipulative abilities, because it seemed as if the ground itself was rebelling against them and, well ( ... )

“Did you hear that, Kotetsu? Your partner is calling for you.” Kriem’s voice was saccharine, every syllable dripping with glee. “Go to him.”

Kotetsu straightened slowly, and when Barnaby saw for the first time the extent of his change his blood ran cold, because no, no, this couldn’t be happening.

But it was.

As Kotetsu lifted his head he saw the blank expression, the alien orange eyes. The orange glow that clung to him, twisting and flickering like flames. He began to walk, stumbling at first, but then settling into a familiar lope, but this wasn’t Kotetsu. No matter how much he looked like him, walked like him, there was a perverse sense of wrongness surrounding him, and Barnaby felt that niggling sense of dread flare up all of a sudden, snaking through his veins until it rushed through his body with every accelerated heartbeat.

“Old man?” Barnaby whispered brokenly, keeping his eyes locked on the advancing figure. But then the panic returned, seizing his vocal cords.

“Kotetsu!” he cried. “What are you…what are you doing!” And ( ... )

Barnaby choked. “No, Kotetsu, Kotetsu don’t-“ but Kotetsu was already reaching out, fastening his hands around Barnaby’s throat, and all Barnaby could think about was how well he knew these hands. Knew how they were always warm, knew how the fingers would flutter against his arm teasingly whenever Kotetsu slung an arm across his shoulder, knew how the network of callouses felt clutching his hand.

All he could think about was how much he did not want to be killed by these hands, by Kotetsu’s hands. How he would have much preferred to have been incinerated along with the rest of his family if he had known that these painfully familiar hands would eventually crush the life out of him.

He kept his eyes locked with the puppet that was not Kotetsu, trying to appeal to the small bit of his Kotetsu he knew must be imprisoned in that head. His fingers dug weakly into the flesh of the tan hands wrapped around his throat, unwilling to hurt Kotetsu even as the thing controlling his body hurt him, causing blackness to lap at the edges of his ( ... )

What happened next? Poor Kotetsu, he would feel so bad if he was ever to get free of the brain-wash. Poor Barnaby, he must have felt like he lost everything all over again... ToT
