Roma is a specific term for a subgroup of Romani people; "Gypsies" or "Romani" is usually preferred for an overall term by the people themselves (So I've heard from a self-identified Gypsy; I'm no expert.)

But uh, either way, western literature has a pretty nasty tendency to malign them as witches and seductresses to be feared.
