So yesterday the youth interns led a workshop that they created about Vietnamese history during our weekly YLO meeting, focusing mostly on the Imperialist history of Vietnam from French colonization until the end of the Vietnam war. it's amazing how many "generals" the ARVN had. it's almost like how all korean families are yangban... or all japanese are samurai. anyway, i remember reading something way back in college about the great majority of all ARVN generals being catholic (and their families being rich. supposedly all those american dollars fell into a few pockets along the way).

i dunno if i agree so much with your emphasis on "western" powers fucking up other countries. japan starved something like a third of vietnam's people to death during wwii and i'd imagine china's scorched earth policy after its 1979 invasion wasn't too fun either. although, western powers, china, and japan is a bit of an awkward phrase.

Yeah, it's hard when we teach this subject because for young people we have to make things very simplistic and easy to digest. To a smaller degree we do mention taht many countries, not just western countries, were imperialist to varying degrees. We talked about japan a little bit when it came to chinese history (Nanking and all), but really wanted to emphasize western imperialism because of the global historical significance that it carries today.

Everyone likes to make fun of the japanese. ha.
