An Ode to my Aunt

May 22, 2008 21:54

They say, "Funerals are more for the living than for the dead". I never really understood that before attending my favorite Aunt's funeral the other day. I'd like to talk about that and the one positive thing I learned about Catholicism.

Hey Mitchell, this is the former "sentimentalmuse" - we read (some of) Thus Spoke Zarathustra together and you pretty heftily intellectually pounded me to the ground, lol - but I was glad for the experience.

Anyway, I rarely LJ anymore, but I thought of you and popped by your journal to see what you've been up to. I'm very sorry to hear of your Aunt's death (though this post is dated =/), but happy for you that you have such fond memories of her to keep with you.

Hope you are otherwise well.

Hey, good to hear from you. :)

I've stopped using LJ altogether (ever since the convert_me community was hijacked and stolen). :-\

My most recent conquest was the Jewish Kabbalah text named "the Zohar". :) But ya, I haven't posted about it here... have you found some other (non-LJ) place online? :)

cheers,

MITCHELL

Ahh, hijacked, eh? I play World of Warcraft and my guild was hijacked, that's the nearest I can identify, lol.

I lurk about facebook is all, it's nice for miscellany, but has little substance. I'm still a believer but have moved past feeling I need to learn to intellectually defend it. These days I pursue simple things in life - mainly to live mine well and pursue small pleasures, like photography and nature; raise my kids well, go to work, etc etc :)

What is "The Zohar" about? I could google it I suppose (likely will after posting this!).

Ahh, hijacked, eh?

Ya, one of my "demi-mods" gave the community password out to someone who then changed it on us. :(

What is "The Zohar" about?

Heh, same thing they're all about, really. Taking old biblical stories, and slightly re-writing them or re-wording them to make some kind of new point (or to clear up some kind of minor disparity they saw in the original text). My favorite re-writing in the Zohar was about the story of Noah cursing all of Ham's offspring. (Remember that one from Gen 9:22?) :) It always seemed kinda cruel of Noah to curse unborn offspring because _someone_ saw his wee-wee! Well, the Zohar re-writes that story and adds the detail that Ham CASTRATED Noah! And that's why Noah cursed the shit out of him! :) Makes a bit more sense, in a way... Anywho, I'm amused by it. :)
