I couldn't explain why it's pleasing to me; it's just such an honest, natural smell. It has a kind of clarity to it.

it's so true. i take comfort in those primal, natural scents, albeit in moderate doses. even driving down a country road with the smell of manure used to fertilize the fields is oddly pleasing to me.

sure beats febreeze and glade plug-ins, that's for sure.

i think some people are so scared and desperate for security that they'll accept what is known (i.e. the guy already in power) as opposed to the unknown (new guy, who in their minds, might screw things up even worse). they're all looking for a hero and giving the badge to the wrong person.

Oh, God, I hate those things. They make me nauseous. I wish people would accept that the world wasn't meant to smell like disinfectant all the time. Smells exist for the very reason that they give an extra dimension to nature, and give us more clues as to what's in our environment. If we cover that up with chemicals, we might as well just cut off our noses and eliminate the category entirely.

And I just realized I delivered a little sermon there. Sorry about that. I'll try to turn off my pontificator for the rest of the comment.

I do wonder, though, if there isn't more fear to go around in America than elsewhere. I suppose it has to do with having more; when you're not used to adversity, it casts more of a shadow than if it's been a constant companion.

i don't undestand the notion of spraying chemicals on dirty things to make them smell clean...without actually cleaning them. and that "clean" smell resembles a hospital corridor.

and yes, again, you're right. i've said it before, but we're a young country and we've never experienced anything like this before....this kind of loss of innocence on our home soil. we always felt safe being separated by the ocean, and now that sense of safety has been taken away from us and we're still coming to terms with that. it's going to take time and re-evaluation, no doubt.
