Joan's picture update

I just wanted to report that the actress who played Brian's Mom, whom I mentioned in my last entry, responded to my question! I was thrilled and surprised. You can see the exchange on her facebook page, if you're interested. She said she had never seen the picture, but she didn't think Brian would have Joan''s picture in his bedroom. I think maybe ( Read more... )

ITA with the actress and expect your theory is correct. It's great that she responded to you.

it's so very cool that she responded to you, although I may...may just slightly disagree about the picture thing :)

It's curious. What are you thinking? Do you remember that whole display of framed photos? Someone on my flist even used them in some photoshop fan graphics, but I can't remember who it was.

I think that up until the time when Joan sided with Claire about David's(??) molestation accusations, Brian would have had a smallish pic of his mother, in amongst others, because IMO Brian was a sentimental (although he hated himself for it) Irish boy who would have, somewhere inside him, still remembered when he was young, how she once loved him, still wanted to believe a decent relationship with his mother could happen. Otherwise, when asking her how she could believe such an accusation about him, he wouldn't have come so near to tears. That scene still amazes me, the rawness of it, Brian's pain showing so clearly. After that, being so burned, I think if he ever did have a picture of her, he would have shoved it in some dark hidden place at the back of his closet if not in the garbage. What do you think?

I think in the beginning of the show, Brian was still hoping and trying to be what his parents wanted. He wanted them to love him. He was performing a ritual of giving Jack money even though his father's rejection hurt him each time. Then, there was the offering of flowers for Joan. I remember him taking out the dead ones from the week before, and putting fresh ones in a vase, like she couldn't even be bothered to take care of them. In the scene you mentioned, and the one in the loft when she found Justin, he is so terribly hurt by her. I think when he decorated his new loft, he would have included her picture in the grouping of personal photos.
