Day 03 - Your favorite series - George R.R. Martin, A Song of Ice and Fire

I read these at a very impressionable age, before I'd been exposed to much epic fantasy - before I'd read Tolkien, even. Some things have changed: ASOIAF has become mainstream (thanks HBO). Rhaegar is no longer a tragic hero but a man who made some poor decisions near the end ( Read more... )

Jaime! So snarky and awesome. :D I'm at the stage where I won't pick up the books again until the next one is released because it is just so depressing getting to the end of it and being all "and then...?"

I'm really curious about your use of the TM in direwolf™ Is this an ASOIAF in joke? Or something to distinguish them from the very awesome real Pleistocene Dire Wolves?

Lol no Pleistocene direwolves here, although someone on the westerosorting comm made "My little direwolves" fanart modeled on My Little Ponies, and it was awesome, let me see if I can find it for you.

A Dance With Dragons...hee hee. I see what you did there. I see it. :P

Also, the image of you putting down ASOS and dancing a jig is quite awesome. I'm just about to start it for my reread...maybe I'll have to give that a try. ;)

*whistles innocently*

Oh, you're up to ASOS now. Not much left ... just two weddings and a funeral ... or three. (?)

distinctly remember having read the ASOS prologue, turning to the next page and seing JAIME in capital letters. I was so giddy I had to close the book and do a jig before continuing.

Aww, hee! That was pretty close to my own reaction, too. :)

I think I've only succeeded in getting 1.5 LJ people to read the series -- i.e. one person on my own and with the other one both I and another person on her flist was a fan, so it was sort of a joint effort. I guess my prosletyzing has been mostly dedicated to the Vorkosigan Saga lately...

Haha "1.5 LJ people" sounds like some kind of new unit from the SI system. I think it's more gratifying to convert meatspace people, because they call/text you at all hours, and you can take them out to dinner and have long discussions, and if you're in the same building you can actually hear them throw the book across the room come the Red Wedding.

Also, do you happen to have the (public) link to My Little Direwolves handy? I remember you linked me to it ages ago but I am not (yet) as linktastic as you. *puppy eyes*

My Little Direwolves:
Grey Wind, Ghost, Lady
Nymeria, Summer, Shaggy

(deviantArt is being very slow for me, but they did eventually load...)

XD I love this! It's probably something akin to "manhours" or "kiloWatt-hours" or something. 1.5 LJ people can power the Internet for 1.3x10^-7 seconds.

and if you're in the same building you can actually hear them throw the book across the room come the Red Wedding.

LOL, there's that. I wish I had RL people to convert... but nobody around here is much of a fantasy fan, alas. Maybe O, when he grows up. Heck, we might even have ADWD by then... :P

It's so true, following someone's first read is amazing. I've been reading aloud to my little sister, it's the bestest thing. "Oh, Renly and Stannis are going to team up and be awesome!" Heheh.

I would love to read that meta btw plzkthx.

I love your summaries of your sister's reactions!!

I would love to read that meta btw plzkthx.
Thanks, writing meta is like writing fic, so much easier to get started than to finish.

Jaime's snark and Arya's badass feel the same at every age, methinks.

If it makes you feel any better, the only person I've managed to convert is my little sister. And an online friend, but I don't think that counts for much.

And do write that piece on ASOIAF and Orientalism if you can! I'd love reading it. (Though I think it should be accompanied with a piece on ASOIAF and Exoticism, if you know what I mean.)

ASOIAF and Exoticism Yes indeed.

I may just have to put off writing the Orientalism piece till I've actually finished Orientalism though. ;) I think I can do 300 pages on the plane.
