Dear Yuletide Author

Nov 16, 2010 14:34

Hi! I'm so excited that we've got at least one or two fandoms in common. This is my first year doing this and I'm super psyched. I'm actually a pretty easy customer to satisfy, so please, write whatever strikes your fancy and I'm sure it will strike mine too.

General Stuff

First of all, I'm not looking for explicit sexual content. Which is not to ( Read more... )

This is not at all what I thought you meant when you said "Yuletide letter." *laughs* I definitely thought it was the same kind of general-update-and-holiday-wishes letter that I'm going to be writing next month. Apparently I am Jon Snow and therefore know nothing. :P

So what is this thing and how does it work, exactly? You just ask ppl to write stuff for you?

It's a rare fandom exchange! I mean, there's some really obscure stuff, like Casblanca (film) or Antony and Cleopatra (theatre)or Wishbone(TV). Basically the idea is to avoid the really big fandoms that have already got dozens of stories per day, like Harry Potter or Inception or Twilight. There's 4000+ fandoms listed this year and I think last year there were upwards of 7000 participants? A computerized program assigns you to someone, and most people will write some kind of letter outlining their likes and dislikes for their mystery author, though it's not required. On Christmas Day all the stories are published anonymously (so you know which story was written for you, but not who wrote it). On January 1 the authors are revealed. And then there's Yuletide Madness, which has to do with unfilled prompts, and I hear it's insane but also a good time. :D

ETA I'm also looking forward to your holiday letter! Cheers!

Sally Lockhart! I'm one of those weird people who loves those books much more than the really famous ones that I can't remember the series title of at the moment.

Yes, His Dark Materials. I could only think of the names of the individual books. For some reason I never really got into them and most people I know had never even heard of the Sally Lockhart books until they made the tv adaptation.

there's a tv adaptation? we don't get quality teevee here in amurka lol. i actually read sally lockhart first, and i think, if i had to choose, i still like them better. it's not that i dislike anything about HDM, it's just that i generally prefer stories that take place on a smaller canavas. HDM was just so ... epic. i really liked the subtle things Pullman did with his plot and characterization in the sally lockhart books. oh my god it's 1:20 in the morning no wonder i'm so incoherent. i'm usually smarter than this when i talk about books i swear.
