At The Drive-In

because for me, it's been there so much longer. Also, At The Drive-In has a much larger canon of music released, and there's the early, raw, depressed ATDI, and then there's the ultimately evil and angry Relationship of Command ATDI. The Mars Volta is awesome, but they're not as acessible to the average music listener, whereas ATDI is just straight up rock and roll. Plus, the lyrics are better.

your description of the bands are reversed, where ATDI (at the drive in) from what i can hear is sloppier, dissonant, "disjointed" (your word) and oddly structured song wise, with too many boring repetitious parts and crappy drum beats. the mars volta are definitely straight up rock. the music is so much tighter, the beats are fuckin CRAZY and punch you in the ass, and even the mother fuckin gutiar effects noises seem somehow harnessed and controlled like a kangaroo on a leash...you know what i mean? and plus cedric actually actually sings his ass off. he's not just yelling and sort-of singing. i love you m,an

The Mars Volta.

Although they only have one album, it's a hell of an album. The songs are so much better musically and vocally. That guy sings like an asshole in "At the drive in" (example: "in a hail of Contraband!"). He uses his voice much smoother and better in The Mars Volta.
