COURT DATE-- THIS FRIDAY-- PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT!

Jun 08, 2005 19:37

Jabari, a painter and resident at the Taskforce has a court date this Friday, June 10th at 2:00 pm. His trial will take place at Atlanta's Community Court: 170 Garnett Street, SW 30303. Directions on how to find the necessary courtroom are below.

Jabari was arrested under the public urination ordinance. This ordinance is one of the most common Quality of Life Ordaninces that is used to target homeless people and criminalize homelessness. With no public restrooms in Atlanta, homeless people are left with no alternative but to break this ordinance, and therefore face possible arrest.

Despite the fact the the Public Defender usually urges his/her clients to plead guilty, Jarbari will plead NOT guilty to the charges based on the fact that he had no other choice than to urinate in a public place. We need to show support for Jabari on this, and show the city that there are people watching how homeless people are being treated in the penal system.

For these reasons, we want as many of you who can come out to the Community Court on Friday to be there!! If at all possible, please come to support Jabari, Critical Resistance, and to show the city that homeless people deserve respect!

IMPORTANT LOGISTICAL INFO FOR FRIDAY:
Jabari's full name is "Lefell Clary". It is unlikely that the trial will start promptly at 2pm; last time people had to wait 45 min. When you enter the building, you must go through a metal detector and security check. After you do that, you will be standing in front of a number of "tellers" who accept money for fines. Turn to your left and go around the corner. There should be a large chart on an easel that lists defendants' names and the location of their hearing/trial. Look for "Lefell Clary" and go to that courtroom, other observors will be waiting there as well.

CR INFO:
As you may know, Critical Resistance Atlanta is starting a campaign to abolish the Quality of Life Ordaninances that, in effect, make it a crime to be homeless. We are currently planning a radio program and exhibition for July, conducting interviews with homeless people in parks and shelters, and collecting arrest records from the city. We need your help! If you cannot make it this Friday, consider coming to our next meeting-- Sunday June 19th at 5pm. We meet at the Little Five Points Community Center, Rm 203 (1083 Euclid Ave). Email @ cratl@criticalresistance.org for any further information.
