I'm staying home out of necessity, as well. I intended to go back to work, but after being out on disability, they laid me off. We did the numbers out; I would need to find a 30k a year job just to stay where we are, financially.
I actually hate being a SAHM. I find it completely unfulfilling. It's not a luxury, it's a punishment for me. Like alwaysamommy" said, it's boring, tedious, and lonely, plus you have jerks saying "Well, you don't have a job."/"You're not working." I've pointed out to my husband that, when I was teaching preschool, I had an 8 hour day with a 45 minute lunch, two weeks vacation, and sick time. Can you imagine any other job where you had your wisdom teeth, as you did, and not only does your boss want you to come in, but they want you on call 24 hours a day and want to physically poke you for a chunk of it? Everyone would complain about how horrible your job was and how your boss was crazy and unrealistic, but because you're a SAHM, it's a luxury and you should be grateful for it

I share so many of your frustrations, especially about the loneliness. That's honestly the worse part for me--that I can sometimes go days without having an adult conversation with anyone except B. I can post about it on the Internet, obviously, and call people, but it's not the same as just being able to see someone and share a meal or something

Exactly. I don't denigrate anyone who wants to be a stay-at-home mom regardless of their reasons, but ideally, the women and men and others who are staying home with their children are there because they want to be. I mean, obviously I want to be with my daughter around the clock, but I also want to have a career that doesn't revolve around wearing five different hats for no pay, which is exactly what I'm doing now

Both worlds have their own share of luck and blessing. Whether that is in the form of having a job or career to go to everyday, or having the financial abililty to be a SAHM. Being a SAHM is an INCREDIBLE sacrifice that I think people easily discount. They have visions of soap operas and bonbons, which is a highly unlikely reality.
I work everyday, and honestly could never imagine being a SAHM. But that is because of my own insecurities, rather than thinking that being a SAHM is a lesser position in any way. There are no breaks from being a SAHM. In fact I have several friends who stayed at home with their kids and are now back in the work force. They say going to WORK is a vaction compared to staying at home.
"I know a study was done a few years back attempting to affix a paycheck value to the work that such women do, and it was something like $40,000 per year?"
To make an even better point, last I read it was actually at six figures.
