Marshall is the only one she'd allow in the room, not her mother or even Mark, just Marshall. He doesn't do much except for hold her hand gently careful to avoid the I.V and the tape holding it in place and watches her in silence. Like always he had trivia fact, tidbits of information ready to escape from his brain to impress and or annoy her, but this, the silence was for the best for the moment and exactly what she needed. After twenty seven minutes since Marshall had taken a hold of her hand the quiet is broken.
"I don't think I can overcome this," She holds back a sob, even now, even after this she fears showing real emotion.
"It'll be hard, but in time we'll be okay."
"I know it's stupid Marshall, grieving for a child I didn't even want, that I was tossing aside...." She can no longer keep the fence erect and the tears quickly flow, the sobs shaking her. He himself starts to cry and though he wants to hold her, pull her close to him he knows that too isn't a choice and instead squeezes her hand tighter
"It's not stupid Mar and you weren't tossing him aside, don't you ever say that." Without warning Mary yanks her hand away and turns her head away from his.
"You lied to me Marshall." It comes out in a whisper but sounds as if it was screamed directly in his ear. He doesn't know how to respond or if there is any responses possible at all. "You told me it would be fine, that the baby would be fine!" The imagined screams now become real and he doesn't flinch or anger.
"I know I did Mary, I know. And God I'm so sorry."
"Don't you dare bring God into this." She spits out the name of denity as if it was poison.
"We both know there is nothing I can say make this better; that is nothing you want to hear so I'm not even going to try." With those words he can feel her calming down, the anger fading and she turns back towards him.
"I appreciate that, but I don't want the silence it only deepens the pain, so.... entertain me sir dork!" Though he felt it was in ill taste considering the circumstances Marshall can't help having a laugh escape.
"Alright did you know that Andrew Jackson was the first president to ride a train? The star fruit is actually called carambola? The official state pie of Delaware is peach. In 1893 -"
"Holy shit Marshall! Never mind." It's her this time that laughs.
