Clovember the twenty-fourth: In the navy

Nov 24, 2013 09:28

In theory navy is what they call a "basic", a colour which goes with anything, but I've always found it problematic. Navy suits me, but I find it way less versatile than black. It looks kind of wrong to me with a lot of colours that look perfectly OK with black, even those it's supposed to go with (like red - only certain shades of red work with ( Read more... )

I love navy. It suits me and, if I'm wearing a dress to work that day, I like that I can wear it if I'm not in the mood to wear black and still feel professional. A navy dress--square neckline--with white polka dots and a slim, red belt has been one of my favourite buys ever.

The maxi though. There have been maxi dresses that I loved the look of, but I don't wear them as I'm severely lacking in both the bust and height area. Plus they tend to be very drappy and I always try to highlight my waist.

I love those shoes (I know, I say that every time, but I do). Heeled lace up's have been particularly appealing to me for the last year or so, and it doesn't seem to be waning.

Ahh, but M, speaking as someone marginally taller and no more busty than you (though quite a bit more hippy, I grant you), I say you just haven't met the right maxi dress. Don't go for those voluminous empire line ones that fall like curtains from below the bustline to pool on the floor in ridiculous fashion (though if you find a really good one, taking it up and adding a wide elastic belt in a coordinating colour might make it work). Go for something more snug with wrappy ruchey detail around the bust to add some oomph. And again, get it taken up. Trust me, it will actually make you look taller... see here for proof! That link doesn't work ("Page not found." :( ) but I can imagine what you mean. Hmmm...I'll keep a look out (and an open mind).

It needs an L on the end (so it's html not htm) and then it does. Pretty dress!

I mostly avoid navy, though I probably have a couple of navy items in my wardrobe. I can manage it as a background or a highlight colour, but big blocks of navy really don't appeal to me. I suspect it's at least partly school-uniform related, as I avoid maroon for (presumably) similar reasons (two different high schools, two different uniforms) - but on the other hand grey formed a key part of both uniforms, and I have successfully rehabilitated that for my adult wardrobe.

I actually *do* like navy, myself, despite going to a school with a navy jumper as part of the uniform. Makes it frustrating that I find it a hopelessly hard colour to coordinate. It's fine with other medium to light neutrals like white, cream, beigey browns, blue denim of medium or lighter wash, etc. but they're not much fun. Shades of red is probably the go. I have noted that my rhubarb pinky-red pencil skirt of 2nd November goes well with navy and today's scarf. Will team them up one day and see.

I wear *lots* of navy - to the extent that Helen, who doesn't wear navy, has about half a dozen navy things because they were cheap or second hand and wrong for me, but right for her. I do wear navy with red, but I probably wear navy with orange/purple/olive green/teal combinations slightly more. And I like navy with pinks and greys and purples too. In short, NAVY, YEAH.
