Novel release!

Denizens of LJ! (I do love the word 'denizens'. Wonderfully seedy ring about it)

I'm interrupting my usual neglect of this blog to announce that my debut novel is finally out! Exciting times. My publishing contract is "digital-first", which means that the book is available as an ebook only on release, print-on-demand if it sells over 500 copies, ( Read more... )

Congratulations, that's awesome news! I wouldn't worry too much about romance readers expecting fluff - there are fluffy romances out there (generally signalled by a cover featuring a porch with a chair on it, or alternatively a lady in a half-unzipped bridesmaid dress) but lately the big thing has been motorcycle club heroes and before that there were a run of romances where one or more characters were dealing with Aspergers Syndrome or panic attacks or other major life stuff. (Some of these books dealt with their subject better than others. Some of them also had the ridiculous half-unzipped bridesmaid's dress covers. All I can say to this is go figure. Before that, the big thing was werewolves).

I hope it makes the POD numbers as soon as possible so you can have a book in your hands.

To be honest, I'd be more comfortable with the label "chick lit", a genre I see as a form of social satire (which usually features romance, but not always), or "new adult", which is exactly what it is, even if my agent sniffs at the label as a marketer's invention. If pushed to it, I'd argue that LDYH is a coming of age novel, in which the central relationship is between Rapunzel and the Wicked Witch; the relationship between Rapunzel and the Handsome Prince is the catalyst, not the core. For me, the romantic relationship has to be core for a book to be a romance.

Will be interested to hear your thoughts, you being a romance reader...

Ha. First Amazon UK review, and lo! Exactly as I feared. I did warn them. Still, early days.

Yay book release!

(Hmm -- Kobo claims this is either not yet released or not available in the US. I assume it simply hasn't gone live there yet ... )

Thank you! My Amazon sales rank looks quite promising (17,500 at Amazon US). According to some dubious online calculate, that means sales of 1 to 10 books a day! I imagine this is just a release day spike, but hey, it's cheering...

Well, it was the first hit for the title on the UK Amazon kindle store, out of 9 :) I look forward to reading it!

Yay, you bought it! Will be very curious to hear people's thoughts on the unconventional feminist angle I've taken...

Hey congratulations, novelist. Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

It does indeed (listens to that ring in cheery fashion). If you say you're a writer (which I'm going to start doing now. Own the profession I've always wanted, I say!), most people *always* ask if you're published, and dismiss you if not. Tcha.
