Ooooh, oh oh. Wow, I love how deftly you wrote them in the beginning so that it wasn't clear to the reader that they weren't Superman and Batman--even the scream and Bruce's reaction to it work perfectly in a canon situation, and it's only Clark's not hearing it (Superman not hearing a scream??) that starts to nibble at the fluffiness of the scene, which then erodes entirely as Bruce calls his parents. I love how mundanely sweet you make everything, how realistic and in-character it all is (Bruce offering to find the most expensive bakery in Metropolis!), which just makes it hurt more as it unravels. And just enough of a hope at the end--I mean, the guy's Batman, if he says he'll make it happen, you know it's going to happen, I have no fear there.

ETA: I totally forgot to mention that like quiltdiva I absolutely adored the line about Clark's gift being to be sexy in unsexy situations. This is a man who rocks polyester suits, true fact

Haha! So true! There are a lot of things about Clark that shouldn't be sexy, but somehow are. Like heat vision. That's terrifying. And yet, when he starts shooting fire out of his eyes, I can't help but think: "Damn, that's hot."

...Oh gosh. Now I've rambled. Look what you've done.

I suspect Clark's vision of Krypton had a Bruce in it in this world...

Oh this is heartbreaking. The beginning was so wonderfully wrought that it was a genuine surprise to see that it was a fantasy generated by Black Mercy. And of course, that made seeing it fall apart that much more painful. Poor Bruce... to have everything he could want and then not only have it taken away, but to have to chose to give it up for a much less happy reality. At least there is hope that he can make things work with Clark.

This was one of favorite episodes of the show! You totally got me on the beginning; I was thinking that it was such a nice domestic fluffy story when the twist hit.

On a side note, your dialogue-writing abilities are amazing.
