the scariest part of teaching...

Teaching itself is going great, actually, despite the subject line. I really love 5th & 6th grade. I have a wonderful faculty mentor, who teaches the rest of the 5th & 6th graders. He's old, but very youthful and sharp-minded, has a blunt and hilarious sense of humor, and is really the sweetest man ever. He never taught me, but I've known him ( Read more... )

Oh yeah, I was both amused and horrified when I started teaching to learn that we gossip constantly about our students and even pass around really bad papers to laugh at them. This was probably my worst nightmare when I was a student myself.

Wash U does have a pretty good program, I think. One of the smartest and most successful guys at Penn did an MA there. And Bob Lamberton is there, and that guy is awesome!

Oh, man, I bet that poor girl was mortified!

Parents don't want to listen to anything anyone has to say, especially people who would ever say about a school situation, "as the consumer." (don't even get me started on the sadly identical situations I've faced at the airport and how this is one of the major problems in our country)

I'm glad you had a backup, though-- sometimes even if they don't say anything, it's helpful to have a grounding wire hanging out behind you when you're about to blow!

I have a good friend, from Rhodes, did you ever meet Megan? She never lived on campus, and was a year ahead of me -anywho, she is in the PhD program at washU for English - sounds like it is a great school... but she's encountered a whole lot of entitled undergrads who feel that b/c they are paying the [outrageous] tuition, they should pass - only an issue, really, if you TA

PS - the customer [or in your case, the parent - and how incredibly irksome is it to hear the parent refer to her child's education as a materialistic commodity] is never right. The customer does not know the company policy or the product -therefore, they think whatever they want is good customer service, and that whatever they don't want to hear is bad customer service - and they never listen

Sorry - my own venting is starting to come through - Glad the job is going well, and hope you are able to wrangle in those silly parents!
