Note that two Democrats voted against marriage equality in committee (and 1 Republican voted aye), so we should expect at most 21 Democrats to vote yes in the full Senate, and probably less. As with NY, it will take some Republican votes to get to 21.
My understanding is that, unfortunately, the prospects are not good to get to 21 votes.
(A 20-20 tie is a defeat, there is no provision for breaking ties in New Jersey).
Damn, I was hoping they had a tie-breaking procedure that might work in the bill's favor.
They've delayed the Thursday vote, and turned Thursday into a hearing for the NJ Assembly as well as a lobby day.
It looks like they're trying to reverse the votes - go through the Assembly first, where they have the votes to pass, which will put additional pressure on the Senate.
Yes. At least through the Assembly Judiciary Committee before the Senate. I've seen both claims.
I'm not sure the 'additional pressure' theory of having the Assembly pass it works, but I suppose it can't hurt at this point, since the votes are obviously not there.
What it does is give people time to organize and put pressure on recalcitrant Senators. But insofar as the other side seems to have at least as an effective pressure lobby I am, unfortunately, still very pessimistic.
You'd think that once Springsteen came out in support it would be all over...
