So if those Somali pirates that are currently causing a bunch of havoc were to wear traditional swashbuckling gear and be photographed that way, would there be a backlash against the actions taken against them? And why?

That depends - are the anti-pirate forces dressed as ninjas?

If they wore fun costumes and never took any hostages, I think the world might be just a little more forgiving. If they just stole the ships and cargo, that would be a less serious crime of theft or robbery - rather than kidnapping and even murder or rape. Piracy has always been a menace, not often brought to the attention of the world - so I doubt if there would be a backlash, because those pirates have shown themselves to be ruthless, dangerous, heavily armed criminals.
