"So, Tortoise, how was your first day as a full-time math teacher?" Funny you should ask that. Let me tell you...
Well, first things first: I had to go and get hired. I may not have quite made this clear in my previous announcement. The principal who offered me the job said that he could not hire me himself; instead he would recommend me to the county school board and they would give me the job. So I got up extra extra early and headed out to the school board office, deep in the heart of Prince George's County, for an 8 AM appointment. I met with Human Resources and they asked for my resume and transcripts, as I had been advised. I dutifully handed them over, and there was some consternation. "This graduate transcript -- it's all music." "Uh, yes...here's my undergraduate transcript." "And what did you study as an undergraduate?" "Music and math." The secretary read over my undergraduate transcript. "I'm sorry. You need 36 hours of math courses in order to teach math. You barely have half that." "I see..." "There's no way we can hire you to work in Prince George's County." "..."
So, instead of signing contracts and whatnot all morning and rushing in to teach classes in the afternoon, I was promptly turned away, and wound up back at home by 9:30 AM. So here I am, back where I started. Jobless. Well, not quite back where I started; I'm a good bit angrier at the world.
We'll see what I can do from here.
