I am a rather strong-willed individual, at times almost perversely so. In particular, I can't stand to hear someone tell me "I'm right and you're wrong," even when that is indeed the case. Damn near everything everyone does is merely self-indulgent on some level, but that doesn't mean that asceticism is the way to go.

I also disagree with Felsenfeld on the grounds that he seems to be trying to take an unjustified moral high ground- as if one cannot both compose _and_ send money, and that artists will categorically do the first but not the second.

Arguments from authority inherently fail with me, partly b/c of my particular variety of "show me the money" skepticism, partly b/c authorities often disagree. For example, I am a teacher, therefore I am an authority on what is good pedagogy. Learning definitions of science terms by rote is pointless, as it only tests the student's memorization or transcription skills, not their understanding of the concepts. One of my colleagues, teaches created the Sci 111 course that I taught last year, feels memorization is crucial. Exact definitions are the most accurate description of the concept that exist, as the author has considered many different wordings and settled on the RIGHT one. We are both authorities, but we disagree. Additionally, no one pedagogy CAN be right, as there are many styles of learners. But that's just my (authoritative) opinion ( ... )
