I don't like directly asking for help, but my indirect requests have met with little response so far. I really need feedback on my efforts at being a professional musician, both online and in the flesh:

If you have been to my website, what do you think of it? Is it easy to navigate? Is there some functionality or content that you feel the site ( Read more... )

The Website
I found it to be extremely easily navigational and accessible. It is well-font and color-coordinated in that it attracts rather than detracts from the material. More pictures/graphics would be engaging as would mroe sound clips/video clips (I think). Otherwise I think it's good and needs some pimping.

The Recital
I only went to one so I only know what happened at your group recital. The music was good - very good. You don't have to worry about talen and technique. What may help is costume. This area is home to flash, vaudeville, and freakery. Wearing some non-traditional clothing would go a long way in catching the eye of rogue Inman-square type crowds.
Also a little confidence goes a long way. The more you project your voice and give direct, concise conversational points between sets the more people listen. Keep the room clinging to you - put on a show.

You are pretty awesome, just gotta get the word out now.

I would reverse the order that news appears, so that the most recent stuff is at the top rather than the bottom.

Also, I would make the "other people's links" section less prominent, and the tabs at the top more prominent. You want people to stay at your site, not go to other people's. ;^)

Also, I think it is a bit confusing that you provide a lot of commentary in your updates--they are fun to read, but you have a blog too, and I was initially confused about whether the news updates WERE your blog.

I like your website a lot, and think that a few simple aesthetic changes will really make it shine.

I agree with all these suggestions.

By "news updates," do you mean the front page? The posts actually are in reverse chronological order, except that I have the welcome message always appearing at the top. I could probably trim the welcome message (especially cutting out the bits saying that I just finished the site) but I do want to keep that on top.

And many of the news items actually are blog posts, technically -- I usually set most blog posts that I categorize as 'news' to also appear on the front page. I suppose I could do with a bit less editorializing, then.

I'll probably put another block or two of internal links above the external links, then. Maybe put up a recent update block.

In some cases, I intend to include a page of performance notes (though I was also considering that as a feature only on purchase). Also, I have the site URL on every score (though not every page), so someone who downloads a score, forgets about it, and then finds it again will be able to go online and find more information if they want to follow up on it.

And I know most of the pieces aren't viable for horn. I've only written for horn the once (well, there was also a horn in the ten-instrument ensemble for my thesis composition, but in hindsight I don't think well of that piece and am not likely to put it online).

This is great -- I wish all the music I played in high school and college had that feature.

Okay. There are pieces where you have the score linked from the individual page for the work, but not on the main page. I don't think there is any good reason for this. An example is "Three Situational Sketches".

This leads to another observation -- despite visiting your website before, this is possibly the first time I have clicked on the name of a work to go to its page. Why? Because the way the page is laid out, I assumed those were links to the store, and didn't investigate them. I looked just now just because you asked us to go kick the tires. And no, I did not read the first sentence on the page, "For more information about specific pieces, click on the title to be taken to the page for an individual work". I don't read web pages linearly, but instead I skip around a _lot_. I'd check to see if anyone else made my error before making any changes based on it, though. I might be weird. :P

The reason is that I am maintaining the main page by hand, and sometimes forget to update when adding new material. I could eliminate that problem by making the tables automatically generated, but then I would no longer have listings for pieces that I haven't made individual pages for yet. One solutions to this is to get around to finishing all those individual pages.

Also, until I get the tables automatically generated, I can change the heading of the first column of each table to something like "Title (with link to more information)" or something like that. Not sure what the bes phrasing is.
