wow, i never really thought about that phrase before.. i rarely hear it.. i guess it is just not a figure of speech i grew up with. theres actually a wikipedia entry about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_summer in case you hadn't found it already.

maybe that guy was just trying to be informative rather than preachy/teachy. in any case i wouldnt worry about not knowing about it. i didn't know any jewish, italian, armenian, dominican stereotypes until i left home, and people thought "of *course*" i should have known. people shouldn't get offended or condescending if you are just asking or are unsure ;p

Yeah, here in Indiana and I think in a lot of other places, there's usually an unusually warm spell of a few days in early November or so that everyone calls "Indian Summer." I wouldn't imagine you'd hear of it growing up in Hawaii because it's summer all year round! The thing that surprised me, more than whether he was being condescending or preachy or not, is that I'd never heard someone even hint at the fact that it was "politically incorrect" to say "Indian Summer"! LOL! Now that I am the "Taco Werewolf," and the first part of my name involves the food of another country and culture, I've been trying to be more worldly and respectful of other racial/ethnic groups' feelings, so it did kind of bother me when he seemed to imply that I was being insensitive to Native Americans! There's also a few other things this particular maintenance guy has done in past that have irked me, such as practically freaking out and threatening to get me in trouble with management one day last Spring, when he came into my apartment to inspect my ( ... )
