[Kicks self for not even mentioning NIN or anything steampunkish]. I knew I should have thought about this longer.
I definitely agree that as the boundaries that diffefentiate different types of media experiences weakens, you will see more "virtual" musicians/bands (what that will look like I have no idea).
And while I do agree that no one can say at this juncture what music from 1990-2000 will have a lasting impact, I think you can look at some musicians and see that, quality of their music aside, they were at the pivot point when something significant changed.
Wow, I guess I really did think about this too much, lol.
I think Gorillaz gives us a peek into what it might look like, especially as the Gorillaz concept matures into almost a franchise, with a fan base who follows the "lives" of the characters, interprets the music through the lens of knowing those characters' invented sci-fi personalities and conflicts, and treats each document (be it an album, a video, a press release or a bit of webcomic) released by the creators as a further piece in the puzzle of What It All Means. It's like playing "who's your favorite Beatle" with personalities that're fully fictional, not bound by the physics of the real world, and as tantalizingly nonlinear as Twin Peaks. (he said, having only scratched the surface of the Gorillaz fanbase)
What I said about having to wait twenty years was really my excuse not to have to think about musicians who've been around only a few years, and limit my decision to those who were "on the job" already in 1990. Anything later, I just lack perspective on. :)
